ARTWORK GUIDELINES

Send files that are ready to become signs.

Good production starts with clear files and a careful proof review. Use these guidelines whether you upload finished artwork or build in the online designer.

The approval checkpoint matters. Nothing should be released to production from a designer preview alone. Review the current production proof and request changes before approving if any detail is uncertain.
01

Supported artwork files

The print-ready production checker accepts CMYK-capable PDF, AI, EPS, TIF or TIFF, and JPG or JPEG files up to 200 MB each. A filename extension and the file's actual contents must match.

PNG, WebP, and SVG files may be used in the online designer or attached as custom-quote references, but those RGB-oriented formats cannot pass the CMYK production-file requirement.

Vector PDF, AI, EPS, or SVG artwork is usually the most flexible for logos, lettering, and large-format work. If using a raster image, provide the highest-resolution original available rather than a screenshot, thumbnail, or image copied from a website.

02

Set up the file for production

  • Build artwork at final size or at a clearly stated proportional scale.
  • Outline fonts or embed them so lettering does not substitute unexpectedly.
  • Include linked images, or embed them in the production file.
  • Keep logos, small type, borders, and other critical content away from trim and finishing areas.
  • Add bleed only when the product template or project instructions request it.
  • For two-sided work, label the front and back clearly and state whether both sides use the same artwork.

If a file uses a reduced scale, unusual trim path, named spot color, or finishing guide, explain that in the artwork notes.

03

Resolution, color, and fine detail

Raster resolution is evaluated at the ordered size. Enlarging a small image does not add detail and can produce visible softness or pixelation. Very small text, thin lines, transparency, gradients, and low-contrast details may reproduce differently across materials and print methods.

Export production artwork in CMYK. The instant check looks for a CMYK document color space; RGB-only or unreadable color setup must be corrected before the file can pass. Displays, office printers, substrates, inks, coatings, and lighting still render color differently, so a screen preview is not an exact color standard. If a color target is critical, include a recognized color reference and wait for written confirmation that color matching is available for the selected product.

04

Artwork check and production proof

Customer-uploaded files receive an instant automated check against the ordered size. It verifies the supported file type, the 200 MB file-size limit, CMYK color mode, readable file geometry, finished-size ratio, and effective raster resolution; it does not verify spelling, exact printed color, font licensing, or every embedded element.

The online designer preview and automated upload result are working checks, not the final production proof. A human artwork check can identify additional concerns such as obvious trim risk, missing sides, low resolution, or file setup that prevents production.

The artwork check is not copyediting, legal review, trademark clearance, or a guarantee that every spelling, phone number, date, color, measurement, or design choice is correct. The customer remains responsible for the content and for reviewing the production proof carefully.

05

What proof approval means

Approval applies to the specific proof version displayed in the private review experience. By approving it, the customer confirms that its wording, layout, quantities, sides, orientation, trim, and other visible specifications are ready for production.

Request changes instead of approving when something is wrong or unclear. A revised proof must be approved separately. Production remains on hold until the current proof is approved and any other release conditions shown for the order are complete.

06

Permission to print

Only submit text, images, logos, and other material you own or are authorized to reproduce. By submitting artwork, you authorize MaketheSign.com and the production providers assigned to the job to store, process, adjust, proof, manufacture, and ship it for that project.

MaketheSign.com may pause or decline files that appear unlawful, unsafe, deceptive, infringing, or technically unsuitable. That operational review does not transfer responsibility for customer-supplied content to MaketheSign.com.
